Introduction to the 2013 Hardcover Version
In 2011, while eating dinner with friends at a restaurant, the topic of “vaginas” came up, as it does. Neither of us remember what sparked this request, but Shannon asked Keith to draw “a vagina” on the table, which was covered with paper and decorated with a centerpiece of flowers and crayons. 

After Keith drew his vag, everyone at our table came over to gawk and laugh at it. His creation sparked a totally fun vaginal conversation. To keep the excitement going, Shannon asked Keith’s boyfriend, who was also at the table, to draw one. When he did, everyone, again, bitchily scrutinized it and then compared it to Keith’s. For the first time ever, we were looking at two vaginas drawn by gay men. 

After the fun of drawing vaginas for dinner, we acknowledged that our little art session had surfaced&#38;nbsp; some interesting reactions and questions. But how could we answer these questions with only two vagina drawings -- a scientifically invalid sample size?

The only way to set forth on our path of inquiry was to get more vag drawings. So we set up art-making booths in places where gays congregate -- gay parks, gay sidewalks, etc -- and got them to draw vaginas. For three years we operated a roving vagina collection laboratory furnished with a table, crayons, pencils, markers, and blank paper. Next to our table we hoisted up a giant pink sign that read “DRAW VAGINAS HERE.” It was a barely scientific study. Part anthropology. Part relational art. Part performance art. Part party.

All different sorts of people came and asked if they could draw vaginas for us. No matter who they were, we told them that if they identified as a “gay man,” we wanted their vaggies. 

These art booths harvested hundreds of drawings. As did our call to friends and networks to let people know we were collecting vaginas. And it worked: people sent us vaginas through the Internet. They handed us vaginas at parties. They even mailed us vaginas. The artwork and people’s responses to it continue to fascinate us. 

Part of what’s kept us interested has been the diversity of vaginas and everyone’s reactions to them. What we’re presenting here is a collection of representations that move from misogynistic to celebratory, from anatomical to metaphorical. We do recognize that the terms “gay man” and “vagina” are highly charged. They’re related to how we define and conceive of ourselves, and that’s serious territory. They’re also charged at the more macro, societal scale -- big heads bandy these terms around and tether them to different and often times conflicting agendas. Politicians, cultural critics, journalists, educators, medical professionals. But we aren’t interested in presenting any one particular message; we’ve gathered “data” and now we’re presenting it. 

The project has taken various forms -- a Tumblr, a party event, a public to-do, a studio wall plastered with hundreds of vaginas -- and we’ve had lots of conversations about what we’re doing, what the artists think, what the vaginas might “mean,” etc. We’ve gone lots of places with it, and we hope that the drawings in this book will take you on a similar journey.

Hyde Park Apartments is a visual taxonomy of an Austin, Texas neighborhood and its various apartment complexes. Flat-footed, everyday photographs of slightly run down stucco and brick structures are paired with fanciful titles such as “V.I.P,” “Spanish Trails” and “The Jacksonian.” Inspired by Ed Ruscha, Lewis Baltz and Bernt and Hilla Becher, the series records ongoing attempts to evoke the ideal through aggrandized nomenclatures.It took me several months living in the Hyde Park neighborhood before I noticed what Berndt and Hilla Becher might describe as a typology: a high percentage of the apartment structures, built mostly in the 60s, 70s, and 80s, were named, and those names were advertised on their facades. Most people, myself included, drove, walked, biked, texted or iPhoned by them without noticing. Then... in walked Ed Ruscha whose early photography books encouraged me to document these structures in unsentimental and serial form. This body of work is by no means high on the originality scale, rather, it continues a conversation that Ruscha began in Los Angeles decades ago. I’m using his strategy to document a beautifully banal architectural phenomenon in a much less (until recently) mythologized location.People don’t want to just live in an apartment, but in a villa. They don’t want a parking lot but an arbor. They want to do more than pay rent, they to aspire to a lifestyle. I’m fascinated by the degree to which these naming display efforts are successful (or not!). In some cases the name, the font, the façade, and the architecture coalesce into a “living experience”: The Beehive, The Monticello. In others, nothing works: Bent Tree,The Del Prado.The book Hyde Park Apartments, published by Publication Studio, presents 47 apartment diptychs. The apartment names (on the left side) extracted from their context (on the right side) emphasizes the disconnect between the advertised and the actual. When closed the two come together. Whether it’s a kiss or a collision is a matter of opinion.

In this exhibition, Keith Wilson puts himself in dialogue with Ed
Ruscha’s early photographs of banal architecture. After touring the
Hyde Park neighborhood of Austin, Texas, on foot, Wilson
produced eighteen straightforward pictures of apartments in the
area, works that are largely displayed in pairs here—one long shot
of each Hyde Park apartment complex, and one perfectly centered
shot of the complex’s logo in situ on the building. The
accompanying artist’s book couples the images in the same way,
creating a sequential part-whole relationship between graphic text
(the logos) and architectural form and pattern (the buildings
themselves). Eschewing the coolness that sometimes set apart
Ruscha’s early work, however, Wilson focuses on the buildings’
obvious, often failed, and somehow endearing middle-class touches. Pastel-painted facades evidence halfhearted
renovations. Letters in kitschy fonts cling to aging clapboard and stucco sidings. All these irregularities help to
syncopate Wilson’s formula, and the works feel sincere despite their art-historical freight.
The fact that this gallery is located inside an actual Hyde Park apartment reinforces this sense of reverence. One
close-up, The Jacksonian, 2009, hangs above a green vintage couch. The work’s titular and compositional focus is
the complex’s name, and the graphic qualities of the font eclipse the viewer’s cynicism about the name itself (a nod
to the Jacksonian era in American democracy; only a few viewers will know that the Jacksonian is also the name of
a Baptist church on the same Austin street as the apartment). One can choose whether to dismiss this combination
of aged, repaired, revered, and revisited material, or to enjoy the delights of Wilson’s ad hoc tourism.

Publication
A collection of photographs of museum patrons documenting famous artwork with digital cameras or smartphones. A cultural phenomenon of more recent years, the intent of such photographs could be seen as an attempt to prove to one's peers that the documenter is culturally savvy and relevant (#museumselfie, #artselfie); photographing the photographer lends a slightly eerie, voyeuristic "big brother" element to the strata of self-documenting one's experiences. This book comments on just how much we find it necessary to identify ourselves through the gaze of others, while still being a participant of it.

The Great Recesion of 2008 hit Suburban Atlanta particularly hard. Two years prior, approximately 100,000 people relocated to metropolitan Atlanta in search of good weather, plentiful jobs and ample, affordable housing. In 2009, that number dropped over 80% to 17,000. One result of the severe downturn is a half-built, desolate suburban landscape stuck in limbo.Collapse is a project investigating the recession's effects on Atlanta’s exurban fringe, a shadowy penumbral zone Robert Smithson may have called “the gap,” a blank and void region we never look at. This abandoned “site” is temporally and spatially located between romantic ruins and all the building that will be built, or what Smithson called “ruins in reverse.”
The photographs present a series of protruding pipes in the desolate landscape of half-built housing developments. Originally intended to supply homeowners with basic utilities (water, electricity, gas, sewage), the pipes now appear to be skyward growing totems, watching over the land as it slowly returns to the forest it once was.

As the population of the city continues to shift and grow, the natural elements within its built environment are quickly becoming curated, “landscaped” and tame. Tasteful parklets pop-up every week, wide sidewalks are replaced with xeriscaped paths, and major streets such as Caesar Chavez Boulevard are altered with palm tree-lined medians. Beautiful examples of urban design no doubt. But is this trend making the city a little unsurprising, too perfect, too un-wild?
